SELF-DISCOVERY PROCESS

The road to Self-discovery is the transformative process of awakening to the potentials within that are at the core to our life's meaning. It is becoming more conscious. But often the progress toward a fulfilling life is blocked. The blocks can take several forms, including our family of origin, our socialization and childhood experiences, or by the unique ways we have developed to adapt ourselves to the world. We gradually learn to cope and ego-adapt to survive. But in the process of coping, we can gradually lose contact with the real core of our being that is now demanding to be acknowledged and heard. Our habitual behaviors can defeat our efforts to connect with our true essence, and thus divert us from our true purpose and meaning.
These habitual behaviors of our adaptation to the world form what we call our character. Often, our way of adaptation is at odds with our deeper essence as human beings, giving rise to various forms of depression, fatigue, avoidance, repression, numbness, addictive patterns or any number of behaviors that keep us from fulfillment through our life's work. If, during the process of self-discovery, more serious mental and emotional problems can emerge in this process that are beyond the scope of the Life Building. In that event the process will be postponed or terminated while alternative treatment is recommended by outside, skilled healthcare professionals. Sometimes the neuroses of the modern world are quite normal, but nevertheless must be addressed before we can become more integrated or whole people.

Regardless of what motivates us to find our life's purpose, we know at some level that our attempts to cope and adapt must be overcome for us to move forward. An important first step for many is the discovery from a personality perspective. What face do I show the world? Through what filters do I perceive reality? How do I process information and relate to other people? What type of person have I become, as a result of learning to adapt to the world as it is? Several assessments are used to aid self-discovery. The goal of this process is not to change anything, but merely to help us discover through what lenses we view reality. This discovery can be quite revealing and may lead us to the next stage of the journey. In some cases, the client will wish to delve more deeply into the model being used and outside resources will be recommended among professionals (we call them "Mentors") whose experience and expertise in their disciplines is outside the normal scope of life coaching. The application of the models used in Life's Work will be limited to a general discussion of the relevant output of the model, to give the client in better understanding of his/her way of interpreting life at present.

In many cases, the client will come to the life purpose quest with a clear idea of who they are and what motivates their behavior and action, but seeks guidance in the clarification of their life's direction. These individuals would rather focus their exploration on the possibilities for better integrating their basic personality characteristics (which they already know well) into a meaningful career, hobby or life's work. The client's needs and discovery objectives will be assessed in the initial meeting. This discussion will drive the process in terms of the types of assessments that will be administered.

Basically, the process we employ at Life's Work is to initiate a dialog between the ego (also called the "false personality") and the Essence, inviting the initiation of a transformative experience. Once one connects to this deep level experientially, the destiny of the individual (the Great Work) gradually becomes clear. As one becomes more self aware, the internal dialog commences. The assessment models assist in stimulating the initial conversation. Additional techniques may also be used, including journaling, meditation and self-reflection. Once one connects with their purpose at a deeper level, then action plans and strategies to enact the Great Work are addressed with refined clarity.
